There are several things that will cause this, and several fixes as well.
First, did this hard drive ever give you any warning prior to this that it was going to fail? A lot of drives have this ability, but in many cases it is as simple as going into the BIOS and turning that feature off, then the drive may continue to function for years with no problem. Note, that you still have corrupted data on it which may require formating and re-installing.
Second thing you might do is boot up to another device, such as a CD or floppy, USB stick or something else and see if you can still get to any data on your hard drive. If you can then you might be able to find the general directory location where the corruption starts. If say it is your Windows directory, you might simply rename the directory to “Bad” or something like that, then reinstall Windows. By NOT deleting that directory, you will be forcing a reinstall to a different location on the hard drive. If the bad area is always ocupied then no problem there.
Third tjhing you can do, and this is my first recommendation, is to get ahold of spinwrite (See link below). This is by far the most powerful disk recovery software in the world, and it’s not too expensive. It may take a few days to run on the computer, but I have managed to save a lot of very valuable data.
I hoped this helped.
